Houston Gunn is a sixteen-year-old entrepreneur, real estate investor, musician, and author of the book Schooled for Success: How I Plan to Graduate from High School a Millionaire. Born in Bonney Lake, Washington, Gunn made his first real estate deal at the age of thirteen; by fourteen, he had begun writing his first book. During a job shadow interview his freshman year of high school, Gunn was challenged by the CEO that he interviewed to write a book. Houston accepted the challenge and finished in fourteen months. Gunn even garnered the attention for famed business mogul Donald Trump, who granted an interview that is shared in this book.
In this personal narrative, Houston shares true stories of his motivation. On his first day of high school Houston attended a welcoming assembly for the freshman class. The leadership teacher announced, “If you get good grades in high school, graduate, go on to a good college, graduate with a degree, and get a good job, most of you will make a million dollars during the course of your lifetime.” The freshman went wild, but Houston thought, “This cannot be right. Are they doing the math?”
His head was spinning. One million dollars over forty years, working from age twenty-two until sixty-two, would be $25,000 per year.
Houston thought, “Why are the teachers and freshman cheering and going wild? We, the graduating class of 2015, should be booing. We have got to learn more about money. We should be worth more than a million dollars over our lifetime!”
Houston made a goal right then and there to make one million dollars not just over his lifetime, but by high school graduation.
